On Christmas Eve, 1974, tropical cyclone Tracy devastated Darwin with wind speeds that were recorded at up to 217 km/h before the gauge itself was blown away. Several vessels were sunk after breaking their moorings and capsizing.
Booya Depth 22 mtrs
262tons. 130 feet. The Booya, steel hulled, three masted schooner was used primarily as a merchant transport ship between various ports. Her skipper and crew set sail in the hours before Cyclone Tracy hit to ride the storm out at sea but she was never heard of since. The remains of the Booya and her five crew where found in 2003 several kilometres from where she was anchored, at Stokes Hill Wharf. She now lies on her starboard side and is home to huge numbers of fish. The site is currently in an exclusion zone, however is soon to be opened up to recreational diving only. A great dive that has been left untouched for the last 30 years.
